The 5 Keys To Elevate Your Life Guide

Welcome Your Emotions Like Rumi's Guest House

Your emotions are like guests in the house of your heart. Some guests are welcome, like peace and joy, yet others are unwelcome, such as sadness, anger, and envy. Can you welcome each guest, as Rumi suggests?

How To Welcome Your Emotions

Rumi, a mystic poet born in the 13th century, shares his timeless wisdom in 'The Guest House,' below. Though I've heard this poem many times, as they say, "When the student is ready, the teacher appears." Now it resonates deeply in my heart and mind.

It reminds me that life is a journey filled with joy, sorrow, and everything in between. Instead of resisting the ups and downs of your emotional landscape, he encourages you to welcome each emotion as a temporary guest in your house or life. Each emotion, whether positive or negative, serves as a guide, offering opportunities for growth and transformation.

Embrace Impermanence

In the face of natural suffering, both physical and mental, Rumi's poem reminds us to embrace impermanence and change. This can be incredibly challenging. Being open and welcoming to what causes us emotional discomfort is daunting, to say the least.

However, as Buddha asserts, life contains suffering, reminding us that it is all part of the human experience. King Solomon echoes this sentiment by stating, 'This too shall pass.' Thus, as we are called to let go of the bad, we are also asked to let go of the good.

Life is indeed transient, and the sooner we accept this, the easier it becomes to navigate the waves of our emotional landscape. Self-compassion serves as the surest vehicle to guide us on this journey.

Practice Self-Compassion

The practice of mindfulness and self-compassion is key to navigating life's challenges with grace and resilience. By holding space for your thoughts and emotions without judgment, you can create the opportunity for healing and growth. Just as Rumi invites you to welcome all guests into your house, you can learn to welcome all experiences into your lives with curiosity and compassion. I'm not saying it is easy but with self-compassion, you can slowly open the door to seeing what is inside.

Invite Curiosity

With self-compassion allow yourself to soften into your emotions with more curiosity. For instance, when I feel a strong emotion, instead of jumping to judge it as pain or pleasure, I say to myself, "Isn't this interesting?" It helps me to create some distance from overwhelm allowing me to observe my emotions with more openness and wonder. This will give you further insight into your habitual emotional responses. Embracing curiosity fosters self-awareness and resilience, guiding you on a journey of personal transformation.

The Guest House by Rumi

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honourably.

He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.
